The prong setting of a ruby by Van Cleef & Arpels
The prong setting is a setting technique that allows the stone to be on top of the ring and thus highlight its beauty. The stone is held in place between a gold or platinum structure – the setting – and prongs that are delicately bent over the stone’s facets.
The prong setting ensures that as much of the stone is displayed as possible. Only four discreet prongs hold the stone securely in place: the metal is barely visible to allow the radiant beauty of the stone to be fully appreciated.
