L'Escarboucle, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts and the Art of Books
December 19, 2024
Since its creation in 2012 with the support of Van Cleef & Arpels, L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts has sought to share jewelry culture with the general public, in France and around the globe. Every year, it initiates numerous publications, among them exhibition catalogues, works for the general public and symposium proceedings. The diversity of these works bears witness to L’ÉCOLE’s founding tenets of remaining open to all and of providing instruction around three main pillars: the history of jewelry, jewelry savoir-faire and the world of gemstones. This year, L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts has further expanded its reach with the opening of the Hôtel de Mercy-Argenteau, its newest address in Paris, which includes two spaces entirely devoted to books: a specialized library and the Escarboucle bookshop.
The library at L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts
In an exceptional eighteenth-century mansion, the library offers six thousand works available for perusal on-site, free of charge. From the stage jewels of the Comédie Française to the fabulous destiny of Tavernier’s diamonds, from Jean Vendome to Daniel Brush, from men’s rings to designing jewels and from birds in paradise to precious stones, the breadth of themes is matched only by a wide variety of formats. Visits to the library are available by appointment to students and researchers as well as novices and visitors driven by simple curiosity.
L’Escarboucle, the bookshop of L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts
First bookshop entirely dedicated to the jewelry arts, l'Escarboucle derives from the Latin word "carbunculus" meaning "small embers" used formerly to designate precious stones of a fiery red hue. With a surface area of nearly one hundred square meters, the bookshop counts nearly three thousand works, available for purchase, on jewelry, designers, savoir-faire and gemology. Conceived by the designer, interior architect and scenographer Constance Guisset, the new address presents rare books and geodes.
