"Interplays of colors by
Van Cleef & Arpels, from the 1960s to the 1970s", an exhibition in Geneva, Switzerland
Exhibition - 26 January 2026
The Maison presents the "Interplays of colors by Van Cleef & Arpels, from the 1960s to the 1970s" exhibition, between January 7th and April 10th, 2026, at Les Salons 1906 in Geneva.
This exhibition, assembling pieces from the patrimonial Collection and archives, reveals the spectrum of colors emerging of these decades through audacious jewelry creations. A time of discovery and experimentation, this era witnessed new chromatic associations in jewelry as well as fashion, embracing novel uses of materials, techniques, and aesthetics that reflected the cultural landscape of that time. For instance, fueled by the voyages of the Arpels brothers, Indian and Persian iconography and savoir-faire accompanied this flourishing of color within the Maison during these years.
Created between 1966 and 1975, these pieces bring together 132 peridots, reflecting the Maison’s taste for luminous and expressive colour combinations. The necklace is composed of a succession of stylised foliage motifs set with peridots and diamonds, punctuated by three floral elements. A pendant suspended from the central flower gently follows the curve of the neckline.
Ingeniously designed, these pieces also illustrate one of Van Cleef & Arpels' signatures: transformability. Through exquisite craftsmanship dedicated to creativity and enchantment, the earrings and necklace offer different combinations. This last one, for example, can be transformed into two bracelets while the pendant becomes an elegant clip.
The 1975 ring, adorned with a central peridot of over 13 carats surrounded by diamonds, evokes the so-called "daisy" rings and cocktail rings popular in the 1970s.

Since the late 1940s, the Arpels brothers travelled extensively in search of new aesthetics and bold chromatic harmonies. This transformable sautoir, which can be worn as two bracelets and a clip, combines engraved lapis lazuli cabochons with smooth turquoise cabochons accented by diamonds. These turquoises take the form of stylized flowers, an inspiration drawn from nature, a cherished source for Van Cleef & Arpels since 1906. The delicate tone of the turquoise adorning the floral motifs contrasts with the deep blue of the geometric lapis lazuli patterns, a chromatic combination particularly favored since the late 1950s.
Dated 1968, the jewelry design precisely illustrates the creation's concepts, materials, and colors. It also serves as a technical reference, thereby emphasizing the necklace's transformable nature.
Dating from the early 1970s, these creations express the Maison’s fascination with distant inspirations. The 1973 necklace, composed of cascading rows of green agate rings linked by diamond-set stylised foliage, recalls the richness of oriental pectorals. This motif is also featured on the Méplat bracelet, whose rings are this time connected by textured yellow gold links. Agate is a gemstone from the Quartz family, valued for its intense color and translucency, enabling captivating plays of light.
The accompanying drawings, bearing the mention “mimosa,” reveal both the technique of textured gold and a stylised vision of femininity characteristic of the 1970s.
This exhibition highlights the Maison's taste for colored stones and geometric motifs from the 1960s and 1970s. The selection of pieces showcases the particularly vibrant palette that dominated at the time, ranging from the cerulean blue of turquoise to the intense green of agate.
