Fortified by its culture of innovation and passion for the artistic professions, Van Cleef & Arpels has set for itself the challenge of incorporating stone marquetry into its watch dials.
The impressions of relief and depth that stone marquetry is able to create are truly striking. Whether the stones are semi-precious or hard, translucent or matt, with bright or saturated colors, the possibilities are endless. Using this technique, dial-makers can reinterpret the most spectacular and enchanting landscapes.

Working with stones demands great expertise. As each stone has its own specific resistance, only perfect mastery of age-old gestures will enable the marquetry inlayer to avoid breaking them, respect the initial design, and sculpt the surfaces correctly. Each material requires its own engraving technique.
One by one, the stones are meticulously engraved, polished, and juxtaposed. As in a miniature puzzle, each cut stone will soon have its own place in a mosaic of precious gems.
Van Cleef & Arpels has chosen to demonstrate its mastery of this art in the California Landscapes collection.
