Since 1906, Van Cleef & Arpels has imagined jewelry creations imbued with poetry and enchantment. The precious or ornamental stones adorning them have been selected according to the most stringent criteria. To take care of your piece, we recommend the following instructions.
Your Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry creation is delicate and thus requires special care and attention.
To prevent damage to your piece, we recommend avoiding exposure to fragrance, soap, chemicals or cosmetics, as these could affect its color and form. It is best to wait until fragrances and cosmetics have dried completely before wearing your jewelry.
It is important not to expose your creation to water (fresh, chlorinated or salt) or to high temperatures (such as prolonged sun exposure).
We generally recommend that you do not wear your jewelry when performing certain activities (sports, gardening, etc.) to prevent it from being knocked or from coming into contact with harmful substances.
To preserve the beauty and shine of your Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry creation overtime, Van Cleef & Arpels would like to share with you some care and maintenance advice.
Each gemstone has its own unique characteristics. You will find the Maison's recommendations for each of them in the dedicated section.
As gold is stainless and unalterable to air and water, the precious metal requires only few care. To clean a full gold creation, you may use a small amount of liquid soap and gently rub it with a soft brush, before rinsing the jewel with lukewarm water and drying it with a soft, dry cloth.
We also invite you to visit our boutique for a complimentary deep cleaning at any time.
Each Van Cleef & Arpels creation should be stored in a fabric-lined case for jewelry, separate from other pieces to prevent it from being knocked or scratched. Some of the materials used by the Maison are more delicate than others and are particularly susceptible to breaking on impact.
Diamonds are the most sparkling and hardest of all minerals, which means that they can scratch other softer materials. Therefore, we advise you to store any creations set with diamonds separately.
The precious and ornamental stones selected by Van Cleef & Arpels reflect the Maison's taste and expertise that is more than centennial. Each one of them requires particular care according to its properties.
You will find specific care advice in order to preserve the beauty of your creation over time.
Mother-of-pearl is a material produced by certain mollusks. For its creations, Van Cleef & Arpels carefully selects the thickest pieces that are particularly shiny and have the highest quality of iridescence, with a strict color palette that mingles soft pink and green undertones. Mother-of-pearl is remarkable for the regularity of its surface and its subtle iridescent reflections which ensure its character and bring it to life in the sunshine.
Mother-of-pearl is a delicate material that requires special care. For lasting enjoyment of your creation, the Maison would like to share the following care recommendations.
Mother-of-pearl is a delicate material and should be stored in its own jewelry case lined with cotton fabric. Any contact with other stones could result in scratching.
Chemical products can attack the polished top surface of the mother-of-pearl, leaving it with a matte appearance. We advise avoiding any direct contact with perfumes, lotions, and hand sanitizer.
Despite the origins of this substance, it is preferable to avoid any contact with water. Mother-of-pearl tends to retract when water evaporates from its surface, making it vulnerable to shrinkage. In case of contact with water, the Maison recommends that you wipe the piece quickly with a soft cloth to prevent any alteration of the design.
To protect the quality of its polish and shine, mother-of-pearl may be gently cleaned using a soft, dry cloth.
Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony that belongs to the microcrystalline quartz family. For its creations, Van Cleef & Arpels carefully selects a minuscule proportion of rough stones to pick the most beautiful pieces with the liveliest colors. The carnelians that the Maison chooses can show variations in shades, textures and opacity which make it possible to constitute uniform sets of stones ranging from intense red to bright orange. The colors of carnelian are often balanced by lapidaries using specific techniques in order to achieve homogeneous undertones. The Maison seeks to obtain the highest level of polish in each stone in order to bring out its full beauty.
Carnelian is a relatively resistant stone that is easy to care for. However, for the lasting enjoyment of your creation, Van Cleef & Arpels would like to share the following care recommendations.
Mirror polish brings a particularly lively sparkle to the stone. In order to protect it, we recommend that you keep it away from any chemical or abrasive product, and therefore that you avoid direct contact with perfumes, lotions, and hand sanitizers.
It is also preferable to remove your jewelry when engaging in any sporting activity to avoid shocks.
Carnelian can be naturally banded, which is due to its microcrystalline composition. If water infiltrates it, the banding may become more visible. The Maison therefore recommends that you avoid wearing your piece in a hot, humid setting (especially shower, spa or hammam).
Onyx is a deep, rich black variety of chalcedony. The Maison selects stones with a fine, homogeneous texture. Polishing enhances the sparkle of this stone so that the surface reflects light like a mirror. For its creations, Van Cleef & Arpels carefully selects extremely pure stones in intense, uniform hues. The colors of onyx are often harmonized by lapidaries using specific techniques to provide consistent undertones.
Onyx is a relatively resistant stone that is easy to care for, and it can be worn daily. However, for lasting enjoyment of your creation, the Maison would like to share the following care recommendations.
To protect the radiance of your stone and avoid abrasion, it should ideally be stored separately from other jewelry pieces in a case lined with fabric. It is also preferable to remove your jewelry when engaging in any sporting activity to avoid shocks.
Chemical products could dull the color of the onyx, diminishing its intensity. We advise avoiding any direct contact with perfumes, lotions, and hand sanitizer.
You may clean your stone with soap water and a soft brush and dry it with a soft cloth.
Malachite is a mineral formed by the interaction of copper minerals with carbonate-rich water. It is distinctive for its deep green color with light and dark bands that bring the stone a subtle vibrancy. Van Cleef & Arpels takes great care to choose malachite with the most beautiful color palette featuring vivid shades of green with regular, harmonious banding.
Malachite evolves over time and tends to become matte naturally. To protect the unique beauty of your piece, the Maison would like to share the following care recommendations.
It is likely that small scratches will appear on the surface of the malachite, since it is a soft, delicate stone. To protect its radiance and avoid abrasion, it should ideally be stored in a fabric-lined case, separately from other jewelry pieces.
Any repeated contact with humid heat, water, perspiration or any abrasive product could alter and whiten the protective surface of malachite. Van Cleef & Arpels recommends that you avoid wearing your piece in a hot, humid setting (shower, spa or hammam) and that you keep it away from products such as perfumes, lotions and hand sanitizers.
Shocks could damage the stone, so we recommend that you avoid wearing the piece during any sporting activity.
To protect its color and shine, malachite may be gently cleaned using a soft, dry cloth.
Chalcedony is a stone from the quartz family characterized by a natural blue hue. Blue chalcedony, recognizable for its homogeneous translucent color, is distinct from banded chalcedony, which features a subtle gradation. For its creations, Van Cleef & Arpels mainly selects a chalcedony with soft, bright undertones ranging from lavender to pastel blue.
Chalcedony is a relatively resistant stone that is easy to care for.
Chemical or abrasive products could alter the shine of your stone. We advise avoiding direct contact with perfumes, lotions, and hand sanitizer.
You may clean your stone with soap water and a soft brush and dry it with a soft cloth.
Agate is a variety of chalcedony made up of microcrystals of quartz, and it exists in a variety of colors. The Maison carefully selects a minuscule proportion of the rough stones to choose the pieces that are most uniform and homogeneous in color. Van Cleef & Arpels picks a palette ranging from light to intense blue. The colors of blue agate are often balanced by lapidaries using specific techniques to achieve homogeneous undertones. The stone must be perfectly polished, a result that is challenging to attain because of the stone’s microcrystalline structure. It is natural for the stone to show slight variations in opacity, which bring each agate its charm and uniqueness.
However, for the lasting enjoyment of your blue agate, Van Cleef & Arpels would like to share the following care recommendations.
High-gloss polish brings a particularly lively sparkle to the stone. In order to protect it, we recommend that you keep it away from any abrasive product, and that you store it separately from other jewelry pieces, in a fabric-lined case, to avoid scratching.
Blue agate can be naturally banded, which is due to its microcrystalline composition. If water infiltrates it, the banding may become more visible. The Maison therefore recommends that you avoid wearing your piece in a hot, humid setting (especially shower, spa or hammam).
You may clean your blue agate creation with soap water and a soft brush. However, be careful not to completely immerse the stone in water, and to dry it well with a soft, dry cloth.
A stone from the quartz family, tiger’s eye is characterized by its chatoyant effect with yellow and brown bands. The stone reveals a silky shine that changes according to the way light is reflected among its fine parallel lines.
For its creations, Van Cleef & Arpels carefully selects stones in warm shades ranging from honey to deep brown. The Maison ensures that each tiger’s eye stone features a beautiful balance of light and dark bands with regular, straight lines.
Tiger’s eye is a relatively resistant stone that is easy to clean. For lasting enjoyment of your creation, the Maison would like to share the following care recommendations.
To protect its radiance and avoid abrasion, tiger’s eye should ideally be stored separately from other jewelry pieces in a case lined with fabric.
Repeated contact with any abrasive product could alter the shine of tiger’s eye. We advise avoiding any direct contact with perfumes, lotions, and hand sanitizer.
Shocks could damage the tiger’s eye. To avoid losing any part of the stone, we recommend that you avoid wearing the piece during any sporting activity.
You may clean your stone with soap water and a soft brush and dry it with a soft cloth.
Turquoise is an ornamental stone mainly made up of copper and aluminum. It is formed when water runs through copper-rich rocks.
The turquoise used by Van Cleef & Arpels is carefully selected for its lively, radiant color ranging from light or medium blue to intense blue. The Maison mainly selects turquoise that is pure blue and contains few inclusions, which is a true challenge for the lapidaries since most stones contain visible brown veins.
Because of its nature and structure, the color of turquoise evolves over time, particularly when exposed to acidity and heat. Therefore, the Maison chooses turquoise, in which its color has first been protected by a stabilization process, while in its natural state.
It is natural for the shade of turquoise to change slightly over the years. To protect the unique beauty of your piece, the Maison would like to share the following care recommendations.
Turquoise is particularly sensitive to the sun and direct light, which can dehydrate it and turn it green. The Maison therefore recommends that its turquoise creations be stored in a closed case.
This mineral forms in dry, arid environments and can absorb liquids and chemical products (water, soap, creams) which may alter its color. It is preferable to avoid any direct contact with perfumes, lotions, and hand sanitizer.
The stone is also sensitive to perspiration because of its acidity, so we recommend removing your jewelry before engaging in any sporting activity.
You may clean turquoise with soap water and a soft brush. Please make sure you dry it well with a soft, dry cloth.
