Humor exhibition at the place Vendôme boutique in Paris
May 19, 2021
From May 19 to August 31, 2021, the Van Cleef & Arpels boutique at 20 Place Vendôme will host “Comic Interlude: the sparkling wit of jewelry” at the Heritage Gallery. This exhibition brings together original archives and pieces from the heritage collection to reveal the constant use of humor as a medium of creation and communication for the Maison.
This exhibition aims to reveal how humor, has been a part of the Maison’s history since its foundation. Reflecting the atmosphere of the different eras and their sometimes disappeared uses, fluctuating with each new generation, humor is above all the expression of this “harmless joy”, dear to Aristotle. Its objective, so eagerly embraced by illustrators, designers, and jewelers, is often to restore a carefree attitude and confidence in a better tomorrow.
The Maison’s gaiety shines through its archives that the Heritage Galery are putting at the forefront of an exhibition for the very first time. When compared with its jewelry creations, including Épouvantail clip dating from 1965, these archives, composed of advertisements, original drawings, and product-cards, illustrate the regular use of jokes, puns, narration, and slogans as a communication tool.
In turn tender, witty, quirky, uplifting, and spiritual, humor for Van Cleef & Arpels always contributes to the enhancement of its precious craftsmanship that can be seen with the same refinement on charming everyday jewelry as on sparkling High Jewelry sets. At the same time, it expresses the Maison's commitment to making beauty something that is for everyone, and of course, participates in a zeal for life conducive to comfort and hope.
