Emerald
A rare beryl of unparalleled beauty, the emerald takes its name from the Sanscrit smaragdus, meaning “heart of stone.” The Maison’s emeralds come predominantly from Colombia, Zambia and Brazil, and are selected according to three main criteria that bring out their unique character.
This in-depth observation makes it possible to bring to light exceptional stones endowed with a spiritual quality.
Van Cleef & Arpels experts choose emeralds for their beauty and the emotions they arouse. They start by appraising the gems’ color, singling out stones that exhibit a deep and consistent green hue. They are also attentive to purity, assessing the subtlety and harmony of the inclusions characteristic to emeralds, known as jardins. The third selection criterion is the essence, which indicates the quality of crystallization and determines the emerald’s brilliance. This in-depth observation makes it possible to bring to light exceptional stones endowed with a spiritual quality. Following a traditional lapidary technique, emeralds are “oiled” using a natural and colorless oil to preserve their original distinctive color.
In the 2016 Émeraude en Majesté collection, Van Cleef & Arpels expresses its particular attachment to Pierres de Caractère™ and pays tribute to the singular charm of these stones.
To preserve the color and the intense luster of this delicate stone, Van Cleef & Arpels recommends storing emeralds in a fabric-lined box separate from other jewelry, as well as avoiding extreme heat and sudden changes in temperature.
