From May 1, 2013, two new creations in pink gold and carnelian will complete the Sweet Alhambra line. Playfully feminine, it will be enriched by heart-shaped and Alhambra earstuds.
Graced by a warm glow, they may be worn with the Maison’s other pieces in pink gold and carnelian, or matched with Vintage Alhambra or Perlée jewels in pink gold.
Renowned for its deep and joyful hue, carnelian was one of the first stones to be used in jewelry. Much prized by the Ancient Romans for intaglios, it was thought by the Egyptians to symbolize life.
The material first appeared in the Alhambra collection in 1968, on a long necklace with alternate yellow gold and carnelian. Its distinctive orangey-red tones now embellish the Sweet Alhambra, Magic Alhambra and Lucky Alhambra lines.

Van Cleef & Arpels celebrates Spring as well as the timeless elegance of its Alhambra collection with a number of creations in yellow gold and malachite. Its enchanting green hues grace eight models, ranging from a 16-motif Magic Alhambra long necklace and matching ring to a bracelet and earrings in the Vintage Alhambra line. Among them, a novel single-motif Magic Alhambra long necklace reveals a new interpretation of the iconic motif.
Malachite is a material that the Maison holds dear. It adorned several creations during the 1970s, including a Vintage Alhambra long necklace from 1973, a four-leaf clover pendant, a butterfly clip and a fish bracelet. In 1975, Princess Grace of Monaco herself was won over by this long necklace, a historic piece which was later presented at various exhibitions, notably “Set in Style” at New York’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in 2011 and “Van Cleef & Arpels, l’Art de la Haute Joaillerie” at Paris’ Musée des Arts décoratifs until February 2013.
Today, Van Cleef & Arpels is once again giving pride of place to this hard stone, much appreciated for its unique alternating light and dark green hues. Thought to watch over travelers and bring protection, its colors evoke nature, renewal and hope.
